UnitedHealth expands Medicare Advantage business in California

UnitedHealth Group will offer a Medicare Advantage plan to more than 63,000 Medicare beneficiaries in California, the insurer said Sept. 20.

The plan is a co-branded product with Canopy Health. Expected to be effective Jan. 1, 2020, the plan will be available for Medicare beneficiaries in Contra Costa, Alameda and San Francisco counties.

UnitedHealth's Medicare membership has been growing rapidly. Across insurers, Medicare Advantage now covers more than one-third of all Medicare beneficiaries.

Editor's note: This article was updated Sept. 25 to reflect that Canopy Health is not a subsidiary of Centene Corp.
