Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health’s board has approved $189 million in the first phase of expansion at the system’s Memorial Medical Center campus in Modesto, Calif., according to a Nov. 2 news release shared with Becker’s.

The first phase of the expansion, which is expected to begin construction in spring 2028, will activate two shelled floors on the hospital’s sixth and seventh floors in its North Tower to expand inpatient bed capacity, including postpartum and neonatal intensive care units.

The sixth floor will see the addition of 56 beds in two new medical and telemetry units. The seventh floor will comprise a 20-bed NICU, which will expand bed capacity by eight, along with 36 licensed beds for postpartum maternity care that add seven beds. The project’s first phase will also lay the groundwork for future patient care area growth to support increasing demand for hospital services.

The Advanced Cancer Center and Care Complex is also under construction next to the hospital, and will feature four stories and 165,000 square feet of patient-centered space. It is scheduled to open in 2029, and will feature about 120 physicians and 400 employees. The complex will comprise advanced diagnostic testing and treatments, including molecular testing, specialized surgeries, radiation treatment, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and other advanced cancer therapies. It will also have numerous cancer screenings, imaging, lab, pharmacy and multiple complementary therapies.
