Most providers open to payer collaboration — Here’s 1 way payers can make that happen

Health plans are looking for new ways to compete for customers, and some are finding that collaborating with healthcare providers can improve outcomes and costs for members; however, payers still have to persuade wary providers to work with them, according to a Deloitte analysis.

The report, conducted by the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, included an online survey of healthcare practitioners from September 2018. Providers from 300 U.S. ambulatory primary care and specialty care practices completed the survey.

Three key takeaways:

1. Two-thirds of providers surveyed said they are open to using health plans’ solutions and believe payers have an edge in data analytics.

2. Still, providers prefer to partner with health systems, according to more than 80 percent of respondents. Most respondents said health systems are better positioned to provide data and insights than health plans.

3. One thing payers can do to bridge this gap is partner more closely and “boldly” with health systems, according to Deloitte.

“Since healthcare practitioners prefer to work with health systems, health plans should partner closely with health systems in designing and delivering solutions,” the report states. “After all, disruptors are threatening the business models of both health plans and health systems.”
