Humana sues St. Jude Medical over pacemaker costs

Humana filed a lawsuit against St. Jude Medical, a subsidiary of Abbott, in an effort to recoup payments it made for the devicemaker's recalled cardiac rhythm management devices, according to Mass Device.

St. Jude Medical's cardiac rhythm management devices were recalled in February 2015 due to a battery issue. In October 2016, the devicemaker publicized that lithium-based batteries in its devices could cause a short circuit. The issue led to 841 reports of early battery depletion and two deaths, according to the report. 

In its lawsuit, Humana claimed St. Jude Medical knew about the issue in 2011, well before it issued a recall in 2015. Humana seeks reimbursement for all payments related to the embattled devices the insurer made to St. Jude Medical.
