HCSC’s CEO steps down: 3 things to know

Paula Steiner, president and CEO of Health Care Service Corp., will leave her position after leading the health insurer since 2016.

Three things to know:

1. David Lesar, HCSC board member and former energy executive, will serve as interim CEO until a successor is named. 

2. Ms. Steiner spent 35 years in the Blue Cross and Blue Shield system. While CEO of HCSC, she stabilized the insurer’s ACA exchange business and spearheaded its Medicare and Medicaid program expansions. 

3. HCSC’s president position will be filled by Maurice Smith, who has spent more than two decades at HCSC, most recently serving as president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois.
