Mr. Jones and his friend and former colleague H. Wendell Cherry each put up $1,000 in 1962 to form a nursing home company, according to Louisville Business First. It quickly expanded, and by 1969, it had 50 nursing homes under its belt and 10 more on the way. In 1974, it rebranded as Humana and began owning hospitals.
Today, Mr. Jones is the lowest-paid employee of Louisville, Ky.-based 21st Century Parks. Mr. Jones’ son, Dan Jones, currently serves as CEO.
Mr. Jones’ philanthropic interests have been a constant in his life. In addition to leading fundraising efforts for The Parklands of Floyds Fork, 21st Century Parks’ most recent project, he helped establish the Humana Foundation in 1981.
