Humana deploys national maternity bundled payment model with 5 OB-GYN practices

Humana added a second specialty bundled payment initiative to its value-based care program: a maternity episode-based model.

Here are four things to know about the effort.

1. Under the model, Humana will wrap payment for a commercial group member's entire perinatal episode of care into one payment. The bundle will include prenatal, labor and delivery, and post-delivery treatment.

2. The national model financially incentivizes OB-GYNs whose patients have better outcomes. The voluntary model will launch at five practices: Ob/Gyn Associates of Southern Indiana; Mid America Physician Services in Kansas; Seven Hills Women's Health Centers and TriHealth in Ohio; and Consultants in Women's Health in Texas.

3. Through the arrangement, Humana will provide data and analytics support to improve care coordination and help reduce duplicative services, readmissions and complication rates.

4. The maternity episode-based model is the payer's second specialty care payment initiative. On April 12, Humana announced it added seven states to its bundled payment model for Medicare Advantage members undergoing total hip or knee joint replacement surgery, bringing the number of providers under that model to 40 across 13 states.
