CMS increases estimate of counties lacking ACA exchange plans to 49

CMS predicts 49 counties across Ohio, Indiana and Missouri will lack an insurer offering health plans on ACA exchanges in 2018, up from a previous estimate of 47.

The agency updated its county-level map of projected issuer participation on the exchanges based on insurer announcements through June 27. CMS said the "map shows that coverage choices on the exchanges continue to disappear week to week" and coverage "options are projected to be down from last year."

CMS also predicted as many as 1,300 counties, or more than 40 percent of U.S. counties, may have only one issuer selling plans on the exchanges for 2018.
