BCBS of North Carolina to fund PCP program amid shortage

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina will invest $750,000 in a program aimed at addressing the state's primary care physician shortage, the health insurer said Jan. 7.

Three things to know:

1. The program, run by the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, will offer training and education for medical students interested in pursuing primary care.

2. Estimates indicate North Carolina needs 1,500 additional family physicians in the next 10 years to meet population and health demands, BCBSNC said.

3. During the next three years, the funds will go toward shadowing and mentoring, health and policy leadership development, and educational sessions and scholarly activities.
