Anthem Medicare Advantage membership grew to more than 1 million beneficiaries in 2018, a 35 percent increase compared to the fourth quarter of 2017, according to Forbes contributor Bruce Japsen.
Anthem CEO Gail Boudreaux told analysts during the health insurer's fourth quarter earnings call that its "individual Medicare Advantage business is on track to achieve our mid-double-digit growth target. In total, we estimate our Medicare Advantage growth will exceed 20 percent by the end of 2019."
Rival health insurers Cigna, UnitedHealth Group and CVS Health's Aetna are also seeing unprecedented growth in their Medicare Advantage businesses, according to Forbes. UnitedHealth's private Medicare enrollment was up 12 percent year over year to 4.9 million members at the end of 2018. Cigna saw Medicare Advantage enrollment grow 1 percent to 432,000 in the same year, and Aetna is expected to report higher private Medicare enrollment as well.
