American Diabetes Association opposes ACA repeal without immediate replacement

The American Diabetes Association inked a two-page letter to congressional leaders opposing the ACA’s repeal without simultaneous replacement that continues coverage and benefits for individuals with or at risk for diabetes.

The association’s Chief Advocacy Officer Shereen Arent wrote the health law spans all facets of the healthcare delivery system and repealing it without immediate replacement would impede healthcare access to millions of Americans with chronic illnesses.

“The Association strongly opposes going back to a time when people with diabetes were routinely denied health insurance or forced to pay exorbitant premiums simply because they have diabetes,” reads the letter.

The ADA said at minimum any change or replacement to the ACA should:

• Provide coverage for at least the same number of people as under the ACA
• Ensure continuous availability of health insurance coverage regardless of a person’s circumstances
• Ensure access to adequate and affordable health insurance coverage for everyone, regardless of health status, income, age and employment
• Continue to prioritize prevention, including prevention of diabetes and its complications
