Aetna errors canceled Medicaid coverage for beneficiaries in Kansas

Errors to Aetna's claim processing system booted 42 Medicaid beneficiaries off their plans in Kansas, according to The Garden City Telegram.

The affected beneficiaries received letters notifying them that their coverage had been dropped because Aetna mishandled their claims, Kansas officials said. The mix-up prevented members from reaching their six-month spending thresholds to retain coverage.

The Kansas health department discovered the issue in July and reinstated benefits for the affected members and stopped further cancellations. State officials continue to double check claims from Aetna's Medicaid plan, called Aetna Better Health, until the insurer has a permanent fix.

The error is one of the top issues Aetna has to correct to comply with its managed Medicaid contract in Kansas, according to The Garden City Telegram. Aetna told the publication it is "dedicated to serving KanCare members" and is working with state officials "to address all issues related to beneficiary eligibility."

This summer, Aetna apologized for complaints that threatened its contract with the state. It also replaced top leadership at its Kansas Medicaid plan.
