Cambia, BCBS of North Carolina call off affiliation for now

Cambia Health Solutions and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina have called off their affiliation agreement for now after the recent arrest and resignation of BCBSNC's CEO.

The organizations had paused their merger after revelations surfaced about an allegedly alcohol-related car crash involving BCBSNC CEO Patrick Conway, MD, and his two daughters. In June, Dr. Conway was charged with driving while impaired and misdemeanor child abuse after the car crash.

In an online statement published Sept. 27, Cambia said: "In accordance with the previously announced pause in the Strategic Affiliation process, Cambia Health Solutions and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina have mutually agreed to withdraw their respective Form A applications for regulatory approval."

The statement doesn't necessarily mean the deal is off the table, but the companies would need refile if they want to combine in the future.

Dr. Conway resigned Sept. 26 at the request of the insurer's board of trustees. He was set to lead the combined entity.
