7 recent lawsuits involving payers

Here are seven lawsuits involving payers posted by Becker's Hospital Review since the first week of March:

1. Anthem, Cigna await court's decision on multibillion-dollar breakup case
A chancery court judge in Delaware is set to decide whether Anthem or Cigna is owed money in a breakup battle that ensued in the two years after their failed merger.

2. Judge orders hearing before signing off on CVS-Aetna deal
A judge tasked with signing off on a government settlement allowing CVS Health to acquire Aetna ordered a hearing on the matter.

3. BCBS Association: It's too late for UPMC to join federal antitrust lawsuit against BCBS plans
The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association asked a court to deny UPMC's request to join a lawsuit that argues 36 BCBS insurers unlawfully conspired to divide markets and avoid competition with one another.

4. Humana settles pregnancy discrimination lawsuit
Humana agreed to pay $500,000 to settle a lawsuit that accused the health insurer of pregnancy discrimination.

5. Cigna fraud case dismissed by appeals court
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit affirmed the dismissal of a class-action lawsuit filed against Cigna that accuses the health insurer of committing securities fraud.

6. Former Texas hospital CEO pleads guilty to defrauding 3 major insurers
The former CEO of Palo Pinto General Hospital in Mineral Wells, Texas, pleaded guilty to defrauding BlueCross BlueShield of Texas, Cigna Texas and UnitedHealthcare out of millions of dollars.

7. Insurers request $2B+ in unpaid ACA payments
Three health insurers filed status reports with the federal government March 5 asking for billions in unpaid cost-sharing reductions payments. While the insurers don't agree on the estimate, a group of insurers' class-action lawsuit estimates damages of more than $2 billion.
