Here are four things to know about the national health insurance industry.
1. The percentage of covered Americans is as follows:
- Private insurance — 56 percent
- Medicaid — 20 percent
- Medicare —14 percent
- Uninsured — 9 percent
- Other — 2 percent
2. The number of lives covered by different types of plans is as follows:
- Medicaid — 49.4 million
- Large group — 43 million
- Medicare Advantage — 17.3 million
- Small group — 16.7 million
- Individual — 16.6 million
- High-deductible health plan/health savings account — 14.3 million
- Medigap — 12.2 million
3. The largest health plans by number of covered lives are as follows:
Commercial: Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, Health Care Service Corp. and UnitedHealthcare
Medigap: American Continental, BlueCross and BlueShield of Michigan, HCSC, Mutual of Omaha and UnitedHealthcare
Medicare Advantage: Aetna, Anthem, Humana, Kaiser Permanente and UnitedHealthcare
Medicaid: Anthem, Centene, Molina Healthcare, UnitedHealthcare and WellCare
4. State premium tax collected from health insurers in 2017 totaled $20.5 billion.
