Sturgis (Mich.) Hospital's birth center will close Jan. 2 amid job and services cuts, according to WWMT, a CBS-affiliate TV station in Kalamazoo, Mich.
A send-off celebration for the last patients at the birth center was expected that afternoon, the report states.
Sturgis Hospital CEO Rob LeBarge announced last month that he would take a 10 percent pay cut to help the 84-bed acute care facility improve its finances. He confirmed plans to end hospice and obstetric services and cancer treatment; reduce inpatient medical and surgical services; and make staffing adjustments in the emergency department. The hospital expects the changes to result in the elimination of 60 full-time positions.
Hospital officials told WWMT the process of transitioning patients at the birth center to new providers has been ongoing over the last month.
