The survey — based on more than 5,000 responses from physicians and surgeons — revealed physicians’ meager enthusiasm and optimism for American healthcare reform. Other major findings of the survey include:
• 65 percent of physicians do not think healthcare reform will reduce defensive medicine.
• 65 percent of physicians believe healthcare reform will negatively affect patient care.
• 51 percent of physicians believe healthcare reform will negatively impact their relationship with patients.
Donald J. Palmisano, MD, JD, former president of the American Medical Association and member of The Doctors Company Board of Governors, said the survey findings show a potential shift from people who feel “called” to healthcare, a shift that could threaten the next generation of healthcare providers.
