Northwestern University Seeks Demolition Permit for Old Prentice Women's Hospital

Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., is seeking a demolition permit to tear down the old Prentice Women's Hospital in Chicago and replace it with a new medical research center, according to a CBS Chicago report.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, which is affiliated with the university, moved patients to the new Prentice Women's Hospital in 2007. The university wants to use the old building's site for research and laboratories.

The university has a coalition of groups supporting its cause, including the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and the Commercial Club civic committee. However, the school is also facing opposition from preservationists who want to designate the building as a Chicago landmark due to its distinctive architecture.

Northwestern University said the new research building would create 2,500 temporary construction jobs and 2,000 permanent research jobs, according to the report.
