Although investigators declined to name hospitals, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center sent a notice to staff that patients received treatment for measles at their hospital, and a patient was treated at Montefiore Medical Center for the disease, according to the report.
Since the disease was not contained in one social or cultural circle like most contagious diseases, it may be harder to track and contain, said Jay Varma, MD, New York City’s deputy commissioner for disease control, in the report.
Measles has been considered eradicated from the United States since 2000 due to federally financed vaccination programs, according to the report. More recent cases are often linked to international travel, where measles is still common.
