4 Risk Factors of CRE Colonization

Indwelling devices, such as catheters and feeding tubes left attached to the body, present a high risk factor for Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae infection, according to a study in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.

Researchers identified potential CRE colonization risk factors for patients admitted to long-term acute care facilities and patients admitted to hospitals.

The following are four risk factors of CRE colonization, starting with the factor with the highest odds ratio.

Indwelling devices: Odds ratio — 5.21
Charlson score (comorbidity index) greater than 3: Odds ratio — 4.85
Immunosuppression: Odds ratio — 3.92
Prior exposure to antimicrobials: Odds ratio — 3.89

Researchers suggest these risk factors can help healthcare providers identify patients with elevated risk for CRE.
