Catholic Health Association Reverses Stance on Contraception Compromise

The head of the Catholic Health Association, Sister Carol Keehan, has sent a formal submission to federal regulators stating the proposed compromises on the requirement that employers cover contraception are "unduly cumbersome and would be unlikely to adequately meet the religious liberty concerns of all of our members and other church ministries," according to a Wall Street Journal report.

This is an about-face from the stance Sister Keehan took in February when she became the first high-profile Catholic to support President Obama's announcement that the government would allow religious employers to turn over responsibility for covering workers' birth control to insurance companies, according to the report.

Sister Keehan now argues that Catholic hospitals should be entirely exempt from the birth control requirement.

The administration is seeking a compromise on the issue that guarantees contraception for employees of religious organizations, while respecting religious beliefs.
