West Penn Allegheny Claims UPMC Bribed Physicians to Leave

West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh has amended its complaint against University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, alleging the competitor paid bribes to West Penn physicians to leave the system, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.

The amended complaint is part of a 2009 lawsuit West Penn filed against UPMC and Highmark, alleging collusion and conspiracy to stifle competition. West Penn has since dropped Highmark due to their pending merger.

West Penn's complaint claims UPMC has "used various predatory tactics to advance its scheme to crush its last competitor" since 1999. Alleged tactics include paying physicians to leave the system, making "defamatory comments" to sabotage West Penn's efforts to borrow and forming joint ventures with community hospitals that excluded West Penn.

UPMC attorneys have requested a May 23 deadline from U.S. District Judge Joy Flowers Conti to respond to the complaint.
