Walgreens to Settle Alleged False Claims Violations With $7.9M

Walgreens has agreed to pay the United States $7.9 million to settle allegations that it offered gift cards and other promotions to beneficiaries of government healthcare programs to induce their transfer of prescriptions to Walgreens pharmacies.

The company allegedly offered beneficiaries of Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program $25 gift cards when they transferred their prescriptions from another pharmacy to Walgreens.

Although advertisements specified the promotional offer was not applicable for government programs, the government claims Walgreens employees frequently ignored that exemption and therefore violated the False Claims Act.
