Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health signed a definitive agreement Nov. 4 to transfer three North Dakota hospitals to Grand Forks-based Altru Health System, according to a news release shared with Becker’s.

The agreement, which is set to close in early 2027, includes CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck, CHI St. Alexius Health Turtle Lake and CHI St. Alexius Health Garrison (N.D.).

CommonSpirit and Altru signed a nonbinding letter of intent in January for the hospitals.

The Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery will continue their sponsorship of CHI St. Alexius Health, which will maintain its Catholic identity and mission under Altru.

Patient care and daily operations will not be altered by the agreement, and both parties plan for an orderly transition.

The news comes after Altru acquired CHI St. Alexius Health Devils Lake, a 25-bed critical access hospital, from CommonSpirit on March 1.

“Through our work together over the years, we’ve developed tremendous confidence in Altru’s commitment to high-quality, compassionate care,” Tim Bricker, president of CommonSpirit Health’s Central Region, said in the release. “We believe Altru is the right partner to build on St. Alexius’ proud legacy, honor its Catholic mission and continue serving patients and families for generations to come.”
