New York City-based Weill Cornell Medicine launched the Weill Cornell Physician-Scientist Incubator Initiative to support early- and mid-career physician-scientists who have established independently funded research programs.
“From a pragmatic perspective, there hasn’t been a stable, dedicated structure to help physician-scientists maintain a focused research program alongside their clinical responsibilities,” Kyu Rhee, MD, PhD, who leads the initiative and is a professor of medicine in the division of infectious diseases, vice chair for research in the department of medicine, said in a Nov. 4 system news release.
The three-year pilot will provide physician-scientists who span translational research with academic, financial and organizational support. Participants will receive extended periods of research time that are financially separated from their clinical responsibilities, along with salary support, personalized career development plans, and guidance from a committee of senior physician-scientist mentors. They will also be able to build networks with academic institutions, foundations and pharmaceutical industry partners. The inaugural cohort includes eight scholars.
Nationally, the number of physician-scientists has dropped nearly 70% in four decades, which “jeopardizes the future of medical advancement,” the release said.
“Physician-scientists are truly an endangered species,” Robert Harrington, MD, dean of Weill Cornell Medicine, said in the release.
