Virginia considers cutting CRNA supervision requirements

A bill currently in a Virginia House of Delegates committee proposes removing the requirement that certified registered nurse anesthetists practice under the supervision of a physician.

If passed, the bill would require CRNAs to work in consultation with — rather than under the supervision of — a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, podiatry or dentistry. The legislation, introduced Jan. 8, was assigned to the state’s Health Professions Subcommittee on Jan. 21.
