The rate of the uninsured population fell from 6.4 percent in 2006 to 1.9 percent in 2010, and study authors wanted to see if this health insurance expansion was associated with earlier breast cancer detection.
Adjusted mammography rates in Massachusetts were 69.2 percent in 2006, 69.5 percent in 2008 and 69 percent in 2010, according to the study.
Health insurance expansion was not associated with increased rates of mammography for earlier diagnosis, and the authors said additional research is needed to assess the impact of insurance expansions in other populations — particularly those with higher rates of uninsured.
