The hospitals are Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill, Quincy Medical Center, Cape Cod Healthcare, Holyoke Medical Center, Berkshire Health System in Pittsfield and St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester.
Their lawsuit would be similar to one filed by Boston Medical Center Hospital in July, which charges that the state illegally cut Medicaid reimbursements to extend coverage to more residents under its landmark health reform process.
A state representative said in the report that raising money to improve hospital funding would be difficult, because the state just recently raised the sales tax from 5 percent to 6.25 percent and an additional increase is unlikely.
