Greenville, S.C.-based Prisma Health has agreed to acquire 36 urgent care centers in South Carolina from Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health, expanding Prisma’s outpatient footprint across the state.
The locations, formerly operating as Doctor’s Care, are expected to transition to Prisma Health Urgent Care when the transaction closes Nov. 1, according to a Sept. 24 news release. The acquisition includes about 500 employees.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Prisma said patients will continue to have access to walk-in and virtual care services, including respiratory testing, X-rays and labs. Following the acquisition, patients will also have connections to Prisma’s primary, specialty and hospital-based services.
“Access to timely, high-quality care is essential to the health of our communities,” Jonathan Gleason, MD, executive vice president and chief clinical officer of Prisma Health, said. “Adding these clinics to our network expands access to Prisma Health’s scope of services across South Carolina and strengthens the connection between convenient, same-day care and our broad network of providers, specialists and hospitals.”
Prisma said the vast majority of the urgent care centers will remain at their current locations, though a small number could be consolidated into nearby centers. The health system plans to retain urgent care employees, with workers affected by site consolidations offered positions at neighboring locations.
The acquisition expands Prisma’s South Carolina footprint as the health system simultaneously pursues growth in Tennessee.
Prisma, which operates 20 acute care and specialty hospitals, signed a nonbinding letter of intent in July for Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health to join the system. The proposed partnership would add Erlanger’s seven hospitals and includes $2 billion in planned capital investments,
If completed, the Erlanger transaction would make Prisma a 27-hospital system spanning South Carolina and Tennessee. Prisma entered Tennessee in December 2024 through its acquisition of Maryville-based Blount Memorial Hospital, a 304-bed facility.
