States must submit audit reports of Medicaid payments made to disproportionate share hospitals to allow CMS to check for miscalculations of uncompensated care. The GAO report suggested that similar audit requirements for payments made to non-DSH hospitals might enable greater oversight to help control Medicaid costs.
