Here are five things to know about the Work Plan.
1. For 2017, the OIG will revise its focus on at least one new compliance risk area for hospital audit activities — intensity modulated radiation therapy. The OIG said prior reviews identified hospitals that incorrectly billed for IMRT services. The agency plans to review Medicare outpatient payments for IMRT to determine whether the payments were made in accordance with federal requirements.

- Incorrect medical assistance days claimed by hospitals
- Inpatient psychiatric facility outlier payments
- Case review of inpatient rehabilitation hospital patients not suited for intensive therapy
- Medicare payments for services after individuals’ dates of death
- Management review: CMS’ implementation of the quality payment program
3. The OIG in its Work Plan revised its focus on Medicare Part D eligibility verification transactions. The OIG said it will review CMS’ oversight of Medicare Part D eligibility verification transactions processed by contractors and whether the transactions were created and used for intended purposes. The OIG said it also plans to review transactions to assess the validity of the data.
4. In 2017, the OIG will also focus on five new compliance risk areas for prescription drug activities, according to a news release. These include:
- Drug waste of single-use vial drugs
- Potential savings from inflation-based rebates in Medicare Part B
- Medicare Part D rebates related to drugs dispensed by 340B pharmacies
- Questionable billing for compounded topical drugs in Part D
- Medicare Part D payments for service dates after individuals’ dates of death
5. According to a news release, the OIG will focus on three new compliance risk areas for medical equipment and supplies activities in 2017, including:
- Part B services during non-Part A nursing home stays: durable medical equipment
