Urban Treatment Center is one of seven such facilities in New Jersey accused of sending multiple bills when only one was required, using billing codes not permitted for tests or billing for tests they did not have the equipment or resources to perform, according to the report. The seven clinics allegedly improperly billed for $3.5 million between 2007 and 2009.
The New Jersey Inspector General is attempting to recover $51.5 million from the charges, with each charge carrying a penalty of $1,000, according to the report. Facilities have 60 days to respond to the chargers.
Urban Treatment Center is the only methadone treatment clinic within the city of Camden and one of two in Camden County, according to the report. Officials from the clinic said they would work with officials so that patients can continue to receive treatment.
