Frederick (Md.) Health is facing four lawsuits alleging the health system failed to protect patients’ sensitive data after a ransomware attack disrupted its IT systems in January, The Frederick News-Post reported April 21.

The lawsuits claim the health system had inadequate cybersecurity measures, neglected its responsibility to safeguard patient data, mishandled breach notifications, and exposed individuals to risks of identity theft and fraud.

The plaintiffs are seeking jury trials and unspecified monetary damages.

“As this issue involves ongoing litigation, Frederick Health is unable to provide specific comments at this time. We are handling this matter through the appropriate legal channels,” Frederick Health spokesperson Josh Faust told the publication.

The hospital detected the ransomware attack Jan. 27 and sent breach notification letters to affected individuals March 28.
