Iowa nurse practitioner assaulted 9 patients before he died, police say

Police said an Iowa certified nurse practitioner, who was found dead in the hospital where he worked, sexually assaulted nine patients, the Des Moines Register reported Jan. 10.

Devin Caraccio, 27, was found unresponsive in one of Ottumwa (Iowa) Regional Health Center's offices in November. Efforts to save Mr. Caraccio were unsuccessful. His death prompted an investigation.

As part of the investigation, police accessed Mr. Caraccio's cellphone and discovered photo and video evidence of Mr. Caraccio committing sexual assault on nine patients.

"It is suspected that all of the victims were asleep or in a state of unconsciousness when the assaults took place," Sgt. Jason Bell of the Ottumwa Police Department said in a news release shared with the Register. Police added that Mr. Caraccio likely acted alone.

The Ottumwa Regional Health Center conducted its own investigation and confirmed the findings.
