CMS is terminating Chicago-based Weiss Memorial Hospital’s participation in the Medicare program, effective Aug. 9.
In a public notice, CMS said the hospital is not in compliance with requirements for “nursing services, emergency services and physician environment.” The Medicare program will cease making payments to the hospital for inpatient services provided to patients admitted on or after Aug. 9, the agency said in the notice.
CMS terminated the hospital’s Medicare participation after the Illinois Department of Public Health shared results from recent surveys conducted at the facility.
“The Illinois Department of Public Health has been closely monitoring the situation at Weiss Memorial Hospital,” the department said in a statement to Becker’s.
“As required by law, the results of our surveys of the hospital are shared with the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services). CMS holds the authority to and made the decision to terminate Weiss’s involvement with the Medicare program effective August 9, 2025. There is a process for reconsideration that Weiss can pursue. IDPH is committed to ensuring patient safety and quality of care at healthcare facilities in Illinois and will engage with Weiss as appropriate.”
In 2023, 56% of the 239-bed hospital’s revenue came from Medicare, according to records cited by the Chicago Sun-Times.
In June, the hospital evacuated its inpatient unit after the air conditioning system failed, pushing temperatures inside the faculty to 90 degrees. At the time, owner and CEO Manoj Prasad, MD, PhD, said he anticipated the AC units would take a few weeks to fix.
Becker’s has reached out to Weiss Memorial Hospital. The report will be updated, should more information become available.
