Illinois Dings 15 Hospitals, Physician Groups for Building Violations

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board has fined 15 providers approximately $2 million total for a variety of violations, according to a Crain's Chicago Business report.

The eight-member board regulates healthcare construction projects to avoid duplicated services in Illinois. The sanctions it administered include monetary payments but also the value of free healthcare provided in lieu of cash, according to the report. The fines totaled $1.9 million during the fiscal year that ended June 30. That's up from $200,000 in 2012.

Here are a few Illinois healthcare providers that reached settlements in fiscal 2013.

• Greenville (Ill.) Regional Hospital agreed to a $773,500 settlement which it will provide by delivering free care and community outreach and hiring two physicians. The settlement stems from the 42-bed hospital's failure to submit an annual progress report and notice of completion for an addition that opened in 2004.

• Downers Grove-based DuPage Medical Group agreed to pay $41,250 and provide $123,750 in free radiation therapy services — totaling $165,000 — after it failed to obtain regulatory approval before building a cancer treatment center and medical office in Lisle.

• Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin agreed to a $125,000 fine for spending $4.8 million more than the approved $325.9 million budget for a 255-bed replacement facility it opened in December 2009.

• Roseland Community Hospital agreed to provide nearly $41,000 in free mammogram screenings after it spent roughly $82,000 more than its approved $3.5 million budget for an adolescent psychiatric unit.
