Humana sues drug testing company over allegedly improper billing

Louisville, Ky.-based Humana claims Baltimore, Md.-based Ameritox fraudulently sought and received millions for services not covered under Humana's health insurance plans, according to a Bloomberg report.

According to the complaint filed with the District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina, Ameritox billed the insurer for urine testing services that were not medically necessary, not ordered by the treating provider and not supported by proper documentation.

The complaint also alleges Humana officials met with Ameritox representatives to discuss the submission of improper claims, yet continued to receive bills from Ameritox regarding unnecessary medical testing.

Humana seeks a court declaration that enjoins Ameritox from continuing to engage in the alleged deceptive billing practices, according to the report.
