House Representatives from five states introduced a resolution for the second consecutive year to establish Sept. 15-19 as Medical Research Week.
If approved, the House would recognize medical research, and in particular, research funded by the National Institutes of Health. Reps. Andre Carson, D-Ind., Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, Suzan DelBene, D-Wash., Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., and Lloyd Smucker, R-Pa., introduced the resolution on Sept. 15.
The move comes amid an upheaval of federally funded research, as more than 1,700 NIH-funded grants have been cut and hundreds more were ended at other federal institutions.
In June, the Association of American Medical Colleges reported that federal agencies had terminated more than 2,800 research grants worth upward of $3.8 billion.
Designating a Medical Research Week would “[recognize] the importance of ensuring strong federal annual funding for the NIH that supports medical research and the discovery of cutting-edge treatments and cures, maintains global competitiveness, and strengthens economic growth,” according to the text of the resolution.
