UPMC sued Highmark and West Penn in May. In the motion, Highmark said every antitrust complaint must “at minimum make economic sense.” The payor said UPMC’s claim that it is a powerless victim of Highmark and West Penn is illogical since UPMC is a “$10 billion integrated global health enterprise” with double-digit revenue growth, according to the report.
A UPMC spokesperson could not be reached for comment in the report.
West Penn also has a three-year-old lawsuit against UPMC, claiming the health system stifled competition.
