The plaintiffs in the lawsuit allege Health First has created a monopoly in southern Brevard County by owning hospitals, physician practices and health insurance plans. As a result, the medical groups suing the health system say their finances and business relationships have been negatively impacted, as well as their ability to provide low-cost, high-quality care, according to the report.
Health First denies these allegations, saying it is a positive competitive force in the community. The health system says the allegations are based on personal grievances against it.
The plaintiffs are seeking $100 million in damages, but the total amount could potentially triple if they win their case, according to the report.
Health First is currently facing a similar lawsuit waged by Parrish Medical Center in Titusville, Fla., which claims that by acquiring physician practices, the health system is manipulating referral patterns to its benefit. Health First also denies those allegations, according to the report.
