Government Shutdown Update: NIH to Turn Away 200 Patients Each Week

Federally funded studies at the National Institutes of Health will have to turn away approximately 200 people each week the government remains shut down, according to an estimate from NIH Director Francis Collins in a report from PBS.

According to the report, almost 200 patients seeking last-resort experimental treatments have already been turned away.

During the government shutdown, the 1,500 clinical trials NIH supports will not be allowed to accept new subjects, and no new trials can begin, according to the report.
