Discharged patient arrested for refusing to leave Oklahoma hospital, dies hours later

A 35-year-old patient was arrested Tuesday evening after police say he refused to leave Norman (Okla.) Regional Hospital, causing a disturbance. Hours later, he was found unresponsive in the Cleveland County Detention Center and pronounced dead, reports KOCO.

The man, identified as Marconia Kessee, came to the hospital's emergency room seeking narcotics to alleviate a headache. He was later discharged from the ER. Instead of leaving, he went to the lobby area and caused a disturbance, according to a hospital security officer.

When police arrived at the scene, Mr. Kessee refused to leave the hospital. When Mr. Kessee refused, he was arrested and taken to the detention center.

A few hours later, Mr. Kessee was found unresponsive in his jail cell. Medical staff at the detention center attempted to revive him. He was then taken back to Norman Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"As a matter of routine, we have reached out to [the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation] to review the incident," Cleveland County Sheriff Todd Gibson said in a news release. "We are committed to being transparent and are cooperating fully with their review."
