The original versions of MS 01.01.01 were criticized by physicians and hospitals as it created the potential for “substantial unintended consequences,” according to the Commission. A task force was assembled by The Joint Commission in January 2008 to address these concerns and suggested revised language to the Standard.

Background information is available on the Commission’s Web site, where comments can also be provided. The comment period was opened on Dec. 17, 2009 and will close on Jan. 28, 2010.
