Catholics Outraged HHS Secretary Giving Georgetown Commencement Address

Commencement address speakers are supposed to inspire graduating students to go far and do big things after school. But a group at Georgetown University is up-in-arms that HHS Sec. Kathleen Sebelius, a Catholic, will even be given the opportunity to address students, according to The Hill.

“It is scandalous and outrageous that America’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university has elected to provide this prestigious platform to a publicly ‘pro-choice’ Catholic who is most responsible for the Obama administration’s effort to restrict the Constitution’s first freedom — the right to free exercise of religion — while threatening the survival of many Catholic and other religious colleges and universities, schools, charities, hospitals and other apostolates,” writes the president of the university’s Cardinal Newman Society, Patrick J. Reilly, in an open letter to Georgetown’s president.

Sec. Sebelius is scheduled to give a commencement address at Georgetown’s Public Policy Institute on May 18. Students protesting the Sec. Sebelius appointment as commencement speaker created a website, GeorgetownScandal.com.
