The following hospital lawsuits were reported since July, beginning with the most recent.

1. Novant class-action settlement over retirement plan expected to top $100M in value
Novant Health entered a settlement agreement to resolve allegations the Winston-Salem, N.C.-based system charged excessive fees for its defined-contribution retirement plan.

2. Adventist sues Wellmont over delay in acquisition of Tacoma Regional
Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based Adventist Health System filed a breach of contract lawsuit against Kingsport, Tenn.-based Wellmont Health System alleging Wellmont is refusing to close on a transaction.

3. Carolinas HealthCare asks court to dismiss antitrust lawsuit
Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System asked a federal court to dismiss an antitrust lawsuit alleging the hospital system drove up costs in the region by imposing steering restrictions in contracts with commercial health insurers

4. Easton Hospital to pay $325k to settle improper Medicare billing allegations
Easton (Pa.) Hospital will pay $325,000 to resolve allegations it billed Medicare for hospital admissions for procedures that should have been outpatient. 

5. Erlanger demands $8.7M in suit over $20M hospital loan
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System filed a motion for summary in its pending lawsuit against Walker County, Ga., in an attempt to recoup part of a $20 million loan Erlanger made to a Georgia hospital.

6. Trinity Health to pay $75M to settle pension mismanagement class-action lawsuits
Trinity Health will pay $75 million to resolve allegations it mismanaged its pension plans, putting an end to more than two dozen class-action lawsuits that have been filed against the Livonia, Mich.-based system over the past three years.

7. St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center to pay $3.2M to resolve false billing allegations
Syracuse, N.Y.-based St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center will pay $3.2 million to resolve allegations it submitted false claims for payment to the New York Medicaid program.

8. Judge approves $12.5M settlement in UPMC antitrust case
A federal judge approved a proposed partial settlement of an antitrust lawsuit that involves Pittsburgh-based UPMC.

11. Kosair Children's Hospital gets new name under legal settlement
A legal settlement between Kosair Charities and Louisville, Ky.-based Norton Healthcare includes a name change for Kosair Children's Hospital.

12. Appeals court revives lawsuits against UPMC over hep C outbreak
A Pennsylvania appeals court panel ruled that six people who contracted hepatitis C from a former UPMC worker should be allowed to present their case against the Pittsburgh-based system to a jury.

13. Barbara Dawson's family sues Calhoun Liberty Hospital
Barbara Dawson died after being forcibly removed from Calhoun Liberty Hospital last December. Now, her family has filed suit against the Blountstown, Fla.-based hospital.

14. Appeals court revives antitrust suit against Sutter Health
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed and remanded an antitrust lawsuit alleging Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health used its market power to force illegal tying arrangements and anti-steering clauses upon health plans.

15. Anesthesiologist sues Kaiser, alleges cost-cutting measures put patients at risk
A former anesthesiologist with Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center in Clackamas, Ore., filed a $9 million lawsuit against Kaiser Permanente, alleging his employment was terminated after he repeatedly complained about the adverse impact of cost-cutting measures on patient safety.

16. Hospital claims self-insured employers conspired with UnitedHealth, Cigna in embezzlement scheme
Red Oak Hospital in Houston filed a string of lawsuits against self-insured employers alleging the companies entered into unlawful agreements with Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealthcare that allow the insurer to improperly divert their employees' healthcare funds.

17. 4 hospitals drop from lawsuit challenging OMNIA health plan
Just three of seven New Jersey hospitals that filed suit against Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey last year over the insurer's tiered OMNIA health plan remain in the suit.
