The incident occurred around 1 p.m., when a family member brought the suspect to the hospital’s emergency department as a prospective patient, according to a statement from the Scottsdale Police Department posted on X.
Following an altercation between the suspect and hospital security, the suspect allegedly shot one guard in the upper body. The injured guard was transported to a nearby trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover. A second security guard sustained a minor hand and wrist injury during the incident.
Hospital security and staff subdued and disarmed the suspect before police arrived. Police took the suspect into custody and recovered a handgun at the scene. An investigation into the situation is ongoing, though police say it was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
