Franklin Medical Center cuts inpatient beds, 59 jobs

Louisburg, N.C.-based Franklin Medical Center, part of Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health, as cut its inpatient acute-care beds from 70 to two and laid off 59 employees, according to a WRAL report.

The hospital will also keep an additional 13 beds for geriatric behavior patients, according to the report. Franklin Medical Center will retain its emergency and outpatient services, and will remain an acute-care hospital.

Franklin Medical Center is set to lose $6.1 million this year.

"With the changes occurring in healthcare, a realignment of our services is necessary to preserve our ability to provide care for our community," Patrick Easterling, senior vice president for consumer operations for Novant, said, according to WRAL.

The 59 layoffs represent 29 percent of the hospital's workforce.
