The following eight hospital and health system layoffs and workforce reductions were covered by Becker's Hospital Review in the last two weeks. They are listed below by number of employees and/or positions affected.
1. Hartford HealthCare Eliminates 179 Positions, Including Hospital CEO
Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare eliminated 179 positions, including the president and CEO of the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain. Clarence Silvia, the now-departed president and CEO, left as part of a systemwide consolidation to improve efficiencies and reduce redundant positions.
2. North Mississippi Health Services Lays Off 109
Tupelo-based North Mississippi Health Services laid off 109 employees. The layoffs affected about 2 percent of the system's 6,190 workers.
3. Mayo Clinic Health System to Lay Off 82
Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Health System plans to lay off 82 transcriptionists in its southeastern Minnesota region. The system is outsourcing that region's transcription services to Amphion Medical Solutions, a Madison, Wis.-based transcription services business, effective March 31, 2014.
4. Bay Medical Center Lays Off 58
Bay Medical Center in Panama City, Fla., part of the Pensacola, Fla.-based Sacred Heart Health System, laid off 58 full-time employees.
5. Healdsburg District Hospital to Lay Off 8% of Workforce
Healdsburg (Calif.) District Hospital plans to lay off 8 percent of its workforce, or about 30 employees.
6. Cape Cod Hospital to Close Endoscopy Unit, Lay Off Employees
Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Maine, will close its endoscopy unit by the end of November, resulting in 21 layoffs. Nurses, booking clerks, secretaries and technicians will be affected by the unit's closure.
7. Rome Memorial Hospital Cuts 10 Positions
Rome (N.Y.) Memorial Hospital eliminated 10 positions from its workforce.
8. MedStar Washington Hospital Center Cuts Jobs
MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., is cutting management and non-management positions from its workforce. The hospital did not confirm how many positions will be eliminated.
