Shasta Regional Medical Center workers vote to unionize

Healthcare workers at Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding, Calif., voted in favor of unionization May 1, according to a news release from the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United.

The 90 percent vote covers 400 nursing assistants, laboratory technicians, respiratory therapists, orderlies, housekeepers, admitting staff and other hospital employees at SRMC, part of Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare. They will become members of Caregivers and Healthcare Employees Union, a CNA affiliate, which already represents 350 SRMC registered nurses.

The healthcare workers will now work on negotiating their first labor deal.
