In midst of CHS divestiture, Pottstown Memorial nurses rally over working conditions

About 40 nurses at Pottstown (Pa.) Memorial Medical Center advocated for good working conditions during a Wednesday rally at the facility, according to a Reading Eagle report.

The nurses, represented by the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals, rallied “to encourage Reading (Pa.) Health System to honor the nursing union’s requests to improve working conditions and patient care,” the report states.

The rally comes about two months after Reading Health System entered into an asset purchase agreement to acquire Pottstown Memorial and four other Pennsylvania hospitals owned and operated by Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems.

The nurses had been in negotiations with CHS for an initial contract, before CHS announced plans to divest the five hospitals, according to the report.

“As we were working on negotiating working conditions and safety, the hospital was sold,” Jessica Cosme, union spokesperson, told the Reading Eagle. “The next step in moving forward is to sit down with Reading Hospital.”

Reading Health System spokesperson Jessica Bezler told the publication the health system was unable to comment on the matter, as the CHS divestiture is still under review. The Reading Eagle was unable to get comment from officials for Pottstown Memorial Medical Center.
